Spiced Turmeric Rice


One of my random whip ups that turned out to be a keeper. I just worked with whatever spices i had on hand so definitely not authentic or anything but we both polished our bowls!


  1. Knob of butter (optional, may use oilve oil)
  2. 1 cup basmati rice
  3. 1 medium red onion, chopped
  4. 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  5. 1 star anise
  6. 1 cinnamon stick
  7. 1 tsp coriander powder
  8. 1 tsp cumin seeds
  9. Pinch of chilli powder (optional)
  10. 1 1/2 tbsp ground turmeric
  11. Salt, to taste
  12. Coriander, chopped (optional)
  13. 1 1/4 cup chicken stock


  1. Melt butter in a hot wok.
  2. Saute onions and garlic till fragrant.
  3. Add in star anise, cinnamon stick and all the spices. Fry till fragrant.
  4. Add in rice and fry till rice is evenly coated.
  5. Transfer to rice cooker, add in chicken stock and cook as per normal.
